Though breast cancer is a tough subject, it is real, it’s everywhere and it’s dreadful! We don’t now yet what causes cancer, but we do know we can "beat" breast cancer with proper treatment and careful attention.
The idea of this post is to convince women to consider having regular breast examinations. I know it’s not pleasant, but by doing this, you can better control your health, you can prevent breast cancer and you can even save your life!
What do you know about cancer? Did you know it has afflicted people for several centuries?
The word “cancer” comes from the father of Medicine, Hippocrates, a Greek physician. He used the Greek words: “carcinos” and “carcinoma” to describe tumors, thus calling cancer “karkinos”. These Greek words actually describe crabs, which Hippocrates thought a tumor resembled.
The oldest documented case of cancer hails from ancient Egypt, in 1500 b.c. Cauterization was the only method of treating breast cancer, but that doesn’t mean that the patient would be healthy afterwards, no, in fact there was no real treatment of the disease.
In ancient times, in Egypt, it was thought that cancer was caused by the Gods.
Back in 2007, breast cancer is the most common cancer, diagnosed in 1 out of 8 women in US. The chance of a woman dying from breast cancer is 1 in 33. However, breast cancer death rates are decreasing and survival rates are on the rise. That’s why early detection plays an important role in the fight against the disease!
What are your risks to have breast cancer?
There are some factors which cannot be changed and which increase the exposure to this form of cancer, such as:
- Your gender: if you are female, you are at risk for breast cancer. Men can have it too, but it happens very rarely.
- Increasing age: The chance of getting breast cancer increases with the age. Almost 8 out of 10 breast cancers are diagnosed in women over age 50.
- Family health history: if you have close relatives suffering from this disease, your risks are higher. If your mother, sister or daughter have it, then your risk is doubled.
- Previous history of breast cancer: if you already had cancer in one breast, the chances of having cancer in the other breast or in the same breast if there is any breast tissue remaining are increased.
- Previous breast radiation: your risks are higher if you had radiation treatments to the chest area.
- Menstrual periods and menopause: women who started having periods early (before 12) or went through menopause after 55 have a great increased risk.
- DES (diethylstilbestrol) treatment: if you took this drug during pregnancy, in order to lower the chances of losing the baby, you have a slight higher risk.
- Race: White (Caucasian) women are more predisposed to breast cancer than African-American women and yet the latter are at higher risk of death from cancer.
Now, I’ll make a brief list of breast cancer symptoms most women don’t know about:
- Breast that is warm to the touch: if your breast always feels warm at touch, you should have an examination. It could be a symptom of inflammatory breast cancer, which is a dangerous and rare type of this disease.
- Flat or inverted nipple: this doesn’t include an inverted nipple from birth.
- A breast that is often itchy: in this case you should talk to a doctor. This is a breast cancer symptom.
- The skin around the breast is dimpled or looks like an orange peel: consult a doctor, even if you feel embarrassed to show it to him/her. Many women think it is cellulite or a result of overweight, but that’s not the cause.
- Swollen or breast that does not change with menstrual cycle or size increase: women should be aware of their breasts size, during the menstrual cycle.
- Breast that is red or blotchy: another symptom of inflammatory breast cancer. Consult your doctor!
Oh, I should not forget about the “magic” bra I found on Discovery website. It is intended to detect cancerous cells. You should see the movie about the
Smart Bra and tell me you opinion about it.
I hope you’ll find this article useful. After I read a bunch of information on this topic from different sources I realized how important it is to consult a doctor, to have regular examinations and have a balanced lifestyle.
Cheers!
